Movie industry and its Future
Probably you all have watched a hundred movies or more by now. And of course, you will watch more in future as well. So, my dear friends, let me talk about the movie industry of the world and its future.
From kids’ movies to scientific documentaries, there are tens of thousands of movies in the world. From the very first movie you have watched to the last one, you may have watched classic masterpieces, superhero movies, science fiction, horror movies, romance movies, comedy movies etc. Movies not only give purely entertainment to the world. Some movies are made to speak about social problems in present, to acknowledge the world about historical incidents, to spread a message to the world, to encourage good deeds and for many more reasons. For example, the movie “The green book” which won the academy award for best picture in 2019 speaks about racism one of the main social problems in the United States. The movie “1917” shows us a story about a soldier who had a special duty to carry in times of World War 1. I will not spoil the movie further. So, you can watch it if you are interested. So, as you can see, the movie industry has been a part of the world now.
In the past movies were released only in theatres. After a while releasing in theatres, some movies were released as compact disks and web-rips but that was the only way we could watch a movie. In 2007 Netflix began to stream some of its movies and television shows directly to homes through the internet. At that time most people thought that was not going to be successful but after a decade people have changed their minds. And with the effect of the coronavirus in 2020 people could not go to theatres and watch their favorite movies and because of that, the movies were not released in the theatres. So, the people had no other choice but to subscribe to a streaming service and watch their favourite movies through it. In addition to Netflix, people have more streaming services to choose such as HBO max, Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon prime videos and so on. So, you can see that streaming services have acquired the place of the theatres although it has some bad effects on the industry.
Because of streaming services and the busy schedule of people, some movies that were released in theatres could not earn money even to cover their budget. While movies in theatres were failing day by day, the CBMs have come to save theatres. For those who do not know what CBMs are, CBM stands for Comic Based Movies such as “Iron man”, “Batman”, “Spider-man No Way Home”, “Watchmen”, and “Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness” etc. Even though people have a very busy schedule, they however have made time to watch CBMs. We can see it clearly by looking into Box office records for the past couple of years. For example, the Oscar-winning hit “Avatar” from 2007 which has grossed USD 2.84 billion in box office sales, has been passed by a comic-based movie “Avengers Endgame” in 2019.
Although CBMs were able to save theatres, other movies have not been able to be successful in theatres. Because of that movie industry is going towards CBMs eventually. Afterall movie industry is not a non-for-profit organization so they should make movies to demand and earn profits. I do not see a fault in it but while CBMs are making billions of profits, dream projects of the best directors in the world such as “West Story” by Steven Spielberg, sequels of once one of the best movies in the world such as “The Matrix – Resurrections”, the movies that have been made with a very large budget such as “The shape of water” by Guillermo del Toro have not been able to even cover the budget. This has a very bad effect on the movie industry and its future. Some of the best directors have already given up their dream projects because of it. So, we will not be able to watch a good movie like “The Godfather”, “Shawshank Redemption”, ”Shutter Island”, “Fight Club” and so forth. Therefore, it is our duty to watch not only CBMs but also movies like that and encourage directors to make more from them. After all, movies are not only for pure entertainment.
So, my friends that is the way that the movie industry is going for now. These days a sequel to the movie “Top Gun” has been released after 36 years in theatres, and I invite all of you to watch it. We will see what will happen to the movie industry after releasing its box office records.
Thank You.
